Officer Safety and the Guardian Mindset
A training seminar sponsored by the Indiana Association of Building Officials, Inc. a chapter of the International Code Council, Inc.

- Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.
- Class will start at 9:00 a.m.
- There will be 1-hour allotted for lunch (lunch will not be provided)
- Class will conclude at 4:00 p.m.
Location: Zionsville Town Hall, 1100 W. Oak St., Zionsville, IN 46077
Parking: Attendees SHOULD NOT park at Zionsville Town Hall. Parking has been coordinated at Kroger and Zionsville Christian Church. The registration confirmation email will include the map showing where parking is available and how to get to the Town Hall via sidewalks/trails.

*IABO has applied for funding through the Statewide Fire and Building Safety Education Fund (675 IAC 12-11). Please DO NOT pay in advance as an invoice will be sent following the class.
This course consists of six contact hours and earns 0.6 ICC PPN CEU's.
Course Description:
Code enforcement and inspection duties can be stressful. Encountering a threatening or dangerous situation may occur during your daily duties. Having a prepared safety mindset, strong communication skills, awareness and de-escalation skills is imperative. This class will go over the basics of the Guardian Mindset, Communications Skills, De-escalation Techniques, Safety Culture, and Situational Awareness. Participants will learn best practices for identifying potentially threatening situations and planning an action to respond.
Instructor: Greg Smith
Greg is an experienced educator with a demonstrated history of working in the public safety industry for over 24 years. His work experiences include Park Ranger, Park Ranger Supervisor, Correctional Officer, Code Enforcement Officer, Loss Prevention Supervisor, Housing Inspector, and Lead Inspector in Arizona, California and Minnesota. As a trainer and professional presenter for government, public and private sector groups, Greg provides expert subject matter material on topics including code enforcement, housing inspections, safety, policy, and procedures. Greg is a certified Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector through the American Association of Code Enforcement and the International Code Council, a Certified Situation Awareness Specialist (SAS), an AVERT Active Shooter Response Trainer and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in The Administration of Criminal Justice from the University of Phoenix. Greg’s training experiences include Academy Instructor for the City of Phoenix Park Ranger Academy, Field Training Officer/Supervisor for the Cities of Phoenix and Mesa Arizona, Loss Prevention Supervisor for the JCPenney Company, and Lead Inspector for the City of Duluth.
Registration Deadline:
The registration deadline is May 12, 2023 at 11:59 pm. No registrations will be received after May 12 and no walk-ins will be allowed the day of the training.
After registration is successfully submitted a confirmation email will be sent to the email address entered during registration.
Cancellation Policy:
All cancellations must be received in writing no later than May 12, 2023 to avoid penalty. All late cancellations and no shows will be billed $50. Faxed cancellations must be verified they were received. It is the responsibility of the registrant to make the verification. Emergencies will be dealt with on an individual basis.
Attendance Notice Regarding Certificates/Funding:
Indiana Association of Building Officials is committed to complying with the requirements of the Division of Fire and Building Safety, as they administer the education fund.
As Indiana Association of Building Officials submits the request for funding on behalf of the membership, IABO will not submit an attendee’s name who does NOT attend the entire class; failure to attend the entire class renders that attendee ineligible for funding.
