2020 Indiana Residential Code – Frame for Success and Wall Bracing

A training seminar sponsored by the Indiana Association of Building Officials, Inc. a chapter of the International Code Council, Inc.


Date: Wednesday, June 21, 2023

  • Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.
  • Class will start at 9:00 a.m.
  • There will be 1-hour allotted for lunch (lunch will not be provided)
  • Class will conclude at 4:00 p.m.

Location:  Zionsville Town Hall, 1100 W. Oak St., Zionsville, IN 46077

Parking:  Attendees SHOULD NOT park at Zionsville Town Hall Parking has been coordinated at Kroger and Zionsville Christian Church.  The registration confirmation email will include the map showing where parking is available and how to get to the Town Hall via sidewalks/trails.

*IABO has applied for funding through the Statewide Fire and Building Safety Education Fund (675 IAC 12-11).  Please DO NOT pay in advance as an invoice will be sent following the class.


This course consists of six contact hours and earns 0.6 ICC PPN CEU's.  


Course Description:

Frame for Success (3-hours):

This course highlights ten common framing issues and details the code requirements and simple fixes. Everything from load path to common energy details are covered. Common flashing and moisture management strategies are also covered.

Attendees will have understanding in:

  • Common load path issues
  • Wall bracing requirements
  • Holes and notches in beams
  • Moisture and energy management
  • Preventing common call back issues with proper installation

 

IRC Wall Bracing (3-hours):

This presentation will walk you through an evaluation process that will help you better understand the Braced Wall requirements of the 2020 Indiana Residential Code and how they impact the way that you design houses. In addition, new concepts in wall bracing design will be introduced that will minimize red tags related to wall systems and maximizes design flexibility. Attendees will learn the basics of IRC and APA simplified wall bracing methodologies and how to address the code requirements for wall bracing.

 

Attendees will have understanding in:

  • The various load paths necessitating the need for IRC braced wall designs.
  • The IRC simplified wall bracing method, and the APA simplified wall bracing methods will be taught and contrasted.
  • The history of wall bracing in the IRC, bracing methods, braced wall lines and braced wall paths.
  • The required braced wall panel widths and locations in a braced wall line.


Instructor:  Matthew Brown

Matt Brown is an Engineered Wood Specialist at APA – The Engineered Wood Association. He is located in Indiana and serves the greater Chicago area and surrounding region. He works to educate the wood industry on the impacts of energy efficiency and educate the raters, code officials and builders on the advantages of wood construction for energy efficiency and sustainability. Matt’s career in the construction industry began over 15 years ago as the Design and Quality manager for Accent Homes Inc., a production builder in northern Indiana. He managed many aspects of the company, from drafting and design to customer walk-through and warranty service. As a member of the Indiana Builders Association’s Code committee, he learned code development and the code development process. Matt eventually moved into the energy rating industry working as Director of Research and Development for Energy Diagnostics Inc., a rating firm that services Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. He was involved in code development, training, and education in all three states and soon became known as the go-to energy code guy. He became involved with energy codes at the national level and attended ICC hearings. He is now an ICC Certified Residential Energy Code Inspector/Plans Examiner, HERS Rater and Certified Green Professional (CGP).


Registration Deadline:

The registration deadline is June 16, 2023 at 11:59 pm.  No registrations will be received after June 16 and no walk-ins will be allowed the day of the training.

After registration is successfully submitted a confirmation email will be sent to the email address entered during registration.


Cancellation Policy:
All cancellations must be received in writing no later than June 16, 2023 to avoid penalty.  All late cancellations and no shows will be billed $50.  Faxed cancellations must be verified they were received.  It is the responsibility of the registrant to make the verification.  Emergencies will be dealt with on an individual basis.


Attendance Notice Regarding Certificates/Funding: 

Indiana Association of Building Officials is committed to complying with the requirements of the Division of Fire and Building Safety, as they administer the education fund.

As Indiana Association of Building Officials submits the request for funding on behalf of the membership, IABO will not submit an attendee’s name who does NOT attend the entire class; failure to attend the entire class renders that attendee ineligible for funding.
