Course Description:

Best practices have been defined as “professional procedures that are accepted or prescribed as being correct or most effective.”

In this course, we’ll discuss both tried-and-true best practices as well as new ideas from jurisdictions of all sizes.  We’ll focus on specific areas including plan review, inspections, permitting, management/administration, and customer service.  This seminar is designed to help develop newer building department staff as well as serve as a refresher for veteran staff.  This will be an excellent opportunity for you to learn about new and innovative procedures while discussing those taking place in your own department with those from all across Indiana.  We hope that this course will leave you inspired to implement applicable best practices and develop more confidence in our profession.

Instructor:  Jim Barrett, CBO

I started my inspection career over 35 years ago as a Combination Building Inspector for a jurisdiction in California, after 8 years in that position I was promoted to Building Official for the next 3 years.   After that first 11 years in this profession,  I was hired by Willdan as a manager covering Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Imperial counties .  As a consulting Building Official and plan reviewer, I have had the pleasure of serving up to 20 different jurisdictions and maintaining a staff level of up to 45 inspectors, plan reviewers and permit technicians.  Because of that responsibility I have had the honor of hiring and training over 200 employees during my career.  One of the joys I have experienced is watching some of these employees move forward in our profession that are now serving as building officials in various jurisdictions.  As inspection and plan review supervisor some of the projects I have had the pleasure of overseeing were, large power plants, medical facilities, high-rise buildings, one million plus square foot warehouses, casinos, a 64,000 (yes, 64,000) square foot single family dwelling, a jet “A” fuel farm, multi-story parking structures and a residential patio cover.

I have had the pleasure of living in Indiana now for 3 years as of April 1st.  During these three years I have had the honor of being a member of the IABO Education Committee.  I have also enjoyed all the new friends I have made at all of the IABO events that I have been able to attend.  Through these friendships I have experienced great opportunities to learn more about being in Indiana.
